LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy is an important part of the mental health process for many members of the LGBTQ+ community. “Minority stress” and stigma — including experiences of violence, discrimination, prejudice, and other negative social encounters due to gender identity, expression, or sexuality — heighten the likelihood that people in this community will develop mental health challenges.
Growing up in the1970s and 80s, in an industrial town in the North of England, at a time when homophobia and fear of difference were endemic, ultimately galvanised me in becoming an LGBTQ+ therapist, advocate and activist, and has remained a core service within my psychotherapy practice to this day.
LGBTQ+ therapy is for you if:
- You are struggling with coming out.
- You Are experiencing identity issues and seek clarity and confidence.
- You fear or lack family acceptance and support.
- You are grappling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and relationship issues.
- You would simply like a safe and accepting space to share your vulnerability and concerns.
